October’s Instructor: John-Paul Tamblyn

I was first introduced to yoga as a way of trying to fix some unhappy parts of my spine a-way back in 2000.  It did a pretty good job of it, so I decided to keep it up!  I started with a mostly Ashtanga-based practice, which turned out to be a little intense for the people I was teaching when I started leading classes.  Based on what I saw in those early classes, and in the next few years of teaching around Toronto, I developed a style of yoga known as “Ahimsa Yoga”, which means “the yoga of non-harming”.  Basically, it’s a method of practicing an active style of yoga that gives people the physical engagement that people need to keep their bodies moving and healthy, but without requiring that people put their bodies through some of the “biomechanically questionable” old-school yoga positions that have been shown to cause problems for many modern-day western yoga bodies.  It’s an adaptive style of yoga practice that allows people to practice as intensely or as gently as they choose, given their interests and needs.  All the good stuff, with none of the bad!
