Steam Whistle Beery Onions on a Bratwurst

Enjoy this Oktoberfest inspired simple meal any time of the year.

Start off by partially boiling the bratwurst in a covered pot. Make sure there is enough water to cover the sausage.

While the Bratwursts are boiling you can start your beery onions.Melt the butter in the pan and add onions stirring often until softened. Once softened, add  the sugar and stir until the onions begin to deepen in colour ( about 2 minutes). Add the beer and simmer gently uncovered for 15-20 minutes stirring frequently. The beer should evaporate. Season with salt and pepper to taste. (Recipe originally from Smokey Joe’s Charcoal Burgers with Beery Onions).

Once the bratwursts are boiled, heat up your frying pan and melt the butter. Place the bratwursts in the pan and cook on each side until both sides are browned evenly (approx. 5-10 min).

Remove from heat, put some beery onions on top and add any additional sides and voila! 



Beery onions

  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 3 large onions, sliced in rings
  • 1 Tbsp of sugar
  • 3/4 bottle of Steam Whistle Pilsner
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
