Steam Whistled Brats

Prepared by Team Cedar Grilling, the 2006 Canadian Open BBQ Grand Champions. This fantastic bratwurst goes great with the Steam Whistle BBQ Sauce!


Preheat grill to medium heat. Char all sides of the red pepper and rest in a paper bag to steam the skin. Remove the charred skin, seed and cut into strips. Cover with tinfoil and keep warm.

Insert wooden skewers in Vidalia slices sideways like a lollypop. Brush onion with olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. Grill for about 10 minutes turning frequently. Sprinkle brown sugar on onions and caramelize on grill. Be careful not to burn the sugar. Remove skewer and cut onion into strips. Cover with tinfoil and keep warm.

Pierce bratwursts with fork. Heat Steam Whistle beer in ovenproof saucepan over direct heat and add brats. Cook for 10 minutes. Turn as needed.

Remove brats from beer and brown over direct heat for about 1-2 minutes per side.

Serve brats in panini bun with Vidalia and roasted red pepper slices.

Try This: Steam Whistle Hot Mustard
Stir 2 tsp Steam Whistle Beer into 2 tbs Keens dry mustard. Adjust to smooth consistency.


  • 1 bottle of Steam Whistle Beer
  • 4 bratwurst or Debreziner (precooked smoked sausage)
  • 1 whole red pepper
  • 1 Vidalia onion sliced into 1/2" slices
  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 1 tbs brown sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 wooden skewers
  • 4 large panini buns
