Tradition with a Modern Twist

Steam Whistle Biergärten will open in early spring 2019

TORONTO, Ont. (January 8, 2019) — Steam Whistle Brewing is putting a modern twist on a traditional German bier hall, and bringing it to Toronto.

Slated to open in the spring in Steam Whistle’s iconic downtown Toronto Roundhouse, the Steam Whistle Biergärten is inspired by the atmosphere, food and drink of the traditional bier gartens and bier halls in Munich — which can be found at pretty much any brewery operating in that city.

“All Steam Whistle employees get a five-year legacy trip to experience the real Oktoberfest in Germany,” says Tim McLaughlin, Vice-President of Marketing for Steam Whistle Brewing. “To enjoy a real German bier hall is incredible. We wanted to share that experience, modernized and placed right in downtown Toronto, at the Roundhouse.”

A project two years in the making, the Steam Whistle Biergärten will build on the brewery’s 18 years of pouring pure pilsner and providing quality service from the Roundhouse.

“We have built our reputation on providing a world class brewery experience here at Steam Whistle,” says Josh Hillinger, Manager of Onsite Experience and Project Manager for the Steam Whistle Biergärten. “The Steam Whistle Biergärten will have an atmosphere and vibe that promotes openness and sharing. An experience that every visitor to Steam Whistle has come to expect and deserves.”

Like a traditional bier hall, the Steam Whistle Biergärten will feature beer that adheres to the strict standards of the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516, with traditional German fare like pretzel, schnitzel and roast chicken. But the menu will also feature vegetarian and vegan options to suit the dietary lifestyle of all guests.

“Steam Whistle is one of Canada’s leading craft beers, but we are proud of the European heritage and inspiration that goes into our beer,” says Mr. McLaughlin. “Masterfully brewed with only four ingredients, it is the kind of beer best enjoyed in a bier hall atmosphere. We are excited at the prospect of opening the doors to the Steam Whistle Biergärten and sharing this experience with Toronto.”

About Steam Whistle Brewing:

Steam Whistle Brewing remains true to the old-world method of brewing pilsner. Its Czech Brewmaster ensures each batch is crafted flawlessly following the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516 to craft a pilsner that is true to what pilsner should be: crisp, golden and well-balanced. One of Canada’s leading independent craft breweries, Steam Whistle is made with only four ingredients and no additives or preservatives. Steam Whistle’s Bohemian-style pilsner is characterized by a floral hoppy aroma, a sweet, full malty character that is balanced by a pleasant bitterness and a clean, crisp finish.
