The debut of our "Last Spike" retro opener has inspired many people to start collecting. One of the most extensive Steam Whistle collections we've ever seen belongs to Chuck Skuce - Chuck has a man cave that any beer enthusiast would love to hibernate in all winter. He is also the creator of the Steam Whistle Retro Openers Facebook page, where fans can trade openers and share their collections with one and other. He's a pretty crafty individual and created this Steam Whistle Retro Opener display board that sits proudly in the Marketing department and receives many oooh's and aaah's from passing brewery tour groups
When did you start your collection?
I REALLY started collecting Steam Whistle memorabilia around 2010.
What made you start collecting Steam Whistle memorabilia?
I would say the yearly retro opener is what got me started on collecting. I love collecting the openers year after year. Then before I knew it, I started collecting everything and it just snowballed from there.
What is the most prized item in your collection?
Great question, it would either have to be the 2001 retro opener (that's right a 2001) which was inserted into cases (just like they are today) to celebrate Steam Whistle's 1 year anniversary. There were only 1000 made and I've only ever seen 4 that still exist. Or my Steam Whistle Indie guitar because only 10 exist.
What was the hardest item to get?
I would have to say any items that are promotional are hard to get because you just can't walk into Steam Whistle and buy them. Or any of the old memorabilia when Steam Whistle used to do a lot of blue before switching over to the green 'full time'. You really have to dig and be patient to find these items which keeps this so exciting; the thrill of the hunt I guess you could say.
How does your wife feel about your collection?
I better be careful on how I answer this one, but honestly she likes the collection too. I don't have EVERY single piece on display just the big ticket items to help liven up the man cave.
What do you have your eye on next?
My #1 item that I have my eye on is the 2013 14 karat gold opener. Its the holy grail of all Steam Whistle memorabilia. It’s going to be a tricky one to get because I think only about 6 exist and it’s going to come with a hefty price tag attached to it.
Thanks to Chuck for sharing his collection with us and happy hunting everyone!
